BIST Science to Business Course

Learning to evaluate opportunities for new business ventures

June 20, 2018
ICFO began partnering with ESADE Business School in the framework of the ICFO+ program to offer the From Science to Business program. Throughout its first five editions, the program evolved yearly to assure that the contents were suited to the needs of today’s researchers in an ever-changing business landscape.

This successful program became a BIST operated training program in 2016, expanding its frontiers to incorporate researchers from the seven different research centers that comprise BIST. This year, the intensive program took place from June 12th through 14th on the ESADECREAPOLIS campus in Sant Cugat.

The program, with its strong emphasis on entrepreneurship, is aimed at BIST researchers including senior researchers, postdoctoral fellows and last year doctoral students. It focuses on helping professionals in academia get acquainted with the business world, increasing their understanding of how companies work and create value in a competitive environment. Through this three day program, BIST scientists become familiar with the new venture creation process and the role that science and technology plays in it.

ICFO postdoctoral researcher Alexander Powell was one of four ICFOnians to take part in the 2018 edition. He reflected, “This course was a great opportunity to have a window into the world of business, which for me had been a totally alien place before now. In three intense days, we covered the importance of innovation for business strategy, the basics of business plans and corporate finance, and different strategies for attracting investors and growing a startup. It was a great experience and should be of interest of anyone who has an interest in how our society operates, and especially to those thinking of moving into a more business focussed field after ICFO.”
