Coherently Driven 2-Component Bose Gases

In the present talk I give a short overview on the physics of 2-component Bose gases in presence of a spin exchange Rabi term.

The ground state (BEC), the elementary excitations and the quantum phase transition between a neutral (paramagnetic) and a polarised (ferromagnetic) state of three-dimensional gases are reviewed. Due to the the Rabi term the relative phase excitations show a gap. The latter is responsible for a number of interesting effects. In particular the existence and the dynamics of vortex dimers and the behaviour of the collective modes of trapped gases are discussed.

In the last part of the talk I present a few results on coherently coupled Bose gases in a one-dimensional lattice, which can be described by a single band 2-component Bose-Hubbard model. The existence of peculiar two-body bound state and the interplay between the Mott-Superfluid transition and the para- to ferro-magnetic transition is explored.
