March 16th, 2021 ALUMNI SEMINAR: Making a frustration a business without missing science BÁRBARA BUADES & JAMES DOUGLAS

The day-to-day of starting & growing a company seems to have a lot of similarities when doing research. We founded MEETOPTICS to help photonics researchers and engineers find lab components much faster and be able to compare their specifications across providers in one platform. In this seminar, we will explain the decisions we had to make to go from 0 to having first users, clients and investors. What MEETOPTICS can offer and will offer in the near future, how we decide on our next steps, find a team and identify what our community needs.

James Douglas and Bárbara Buades founded MEETOPTICS after ICFO. Bárbara with a background in Physics, and MSc at Imperial College (UK) did her PhD in the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics group led by Prof. Dr. Jens Biegert at ICFO. James with a background in Mathematics and MSc from University of Otago (New Zealand) did his PhD in Oxford University and worked at ICFO as a postdoc at Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics group led by Darrick Chang. With their experimental and computing skills, respectively, they build from 0 a highly specialised optics search with now more than 35.0000 products.
