ICFO provides cutting edge facilities, a stimulating international and interdisciplinary environment, as well as high-level training and extended administrative support for national and international researchers, at different career levels, with backgrounds in scientific disciplines related to Optics and Photonics and their applications, including Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.

ICFO researchers are recruited to perform a research project as part of both medium- and long-term programs, aligned with regional and national regulations and according to the requirements of the European Charter for Researchers and The Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, adopted by the European Commission as a Recommendation to the Member States in 2005, with the aim to improve working conditions and to ensure attractive research careers within the European Research Area.
At the end of their research project, ICFOnians are encouraged to continue their careers at other internationally recognized institutions or in industry. They leave ICFO also relying on a strong Alumni network, a resource for creating new opportunities, connecting ICFOnians and ICFO Alumni all over the world.
ICFO Research Profiles and Positions
Would you like to carry out a short-term stay/internship or final project within the scope of your undergraduate or postgraduate studies?
ICFO welcomes students from national or international universities who become associated with ICFO for a limited period of time for training purposes, carrying out research projects. In the scope of ICFO Young Minds Program, selected students are given the opportunity to participate in ICFO's rich scientific life and to benefit from the experience of ICFO researchers. Students are integrated in an ICFO group, and conduct their activities under the supervision of the corresponding group leader.

ICFO, in partnership with the Technical University of Catalonia-Barcelona Tech, offers the possibility to do a PhD Program in the research topics pursued by the Research Groups of the institute . Petitions for enrollment to this PhD Program should be channelled through application to PhD fellowships, available to outstanding international graduate students. ICFO PhD-students are integrated into an ICFO group, and conduct their studies under the supervision of the corresponding group leader.

ICFO Research engineers conduct advanced technical activities associated with an external project, e.g. industrially oriented projects. The duration of the contract is limited by the duration of the external project. ICFO Research engineers may hold different academic degrees, including engineering or doctorate.
ICFO Research engineers are integrated in a group and conduct their activities under the supervision of the corresponding group leader.

A postdoctoral researcher at ICFO enhances his/her scientific training after completing the PhD. Contracts may last for several years. ICFO Postdoctoral researchers may receive appointments as Research Fellows or as Post-Doctoral Researchers, depending on scientific seniority, experience or and project-needs. Postdoctoral researchers at ICFO are integrated in a group and conduct their activities under the supervision of the corresponding group leader. ICFO Postdoctoral researchers are expected to take positions in other academic institutions or in industry after completing their post at ICFO.

ICFO strives to offer its researchers and personnel the best working and career-boosting conditions. This is reflected in the fact that researchers are appointed in agreement with regional and national regulations and following the requirements of the European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers, adopted by the European Commission as a Recommendation to the Member States in 2005.
ICFO strongly supports the Charter and the Code and officially endorsed them in January 2014. Subsequently, a Core Committee was created to perform an internal analysis, involving key-players and following the EU recommendations, to establish a framework and a detailed action plan for the implementation of the HR Strategy for Research (HRS4R) @ ICFO. The Core Committee is responsible for assessing and following-up on the implementation of the HRS4R Action Plan.
The following strategic objectives were defined:
- Continuous enhancement of the Recruiting & Hiring Life-Cycle.
- Continuous enhancement of the Career Development Plan.
- Continuous enhancement of Good Practices in Research.
- Continuous enhancement of the Research Environment.

ICFO was conceived as a place where highly motivated and dedicated researchers would have the resources, both in terms of advanced equipment and human capital, to engage in research at the very highest international level. At the core of ICFO Life is the drive for deeper scientific understanding which can only be gained by dedication, hard work, asking questions and experimenting with new concepts and ideas. ICFO’s scientific impact factor is high and the ambition to publish original findings is strong.
WHO WORKS AT ICFO: ICFOnians are postgraduate students, PhD students, research engineers, junior and senior postdoctoral researchers, tenure-track and tenured faculty as well as a dedicated team of management and technical support professionals all working towards the common goal of advancing the science of Light. The ambiance is international, young, dynamic, energetic and creative.
A COLLABORATIVE WORKING ENVIRONMENT: In spite of, or perhaps because of ICFOnians’ ambitious goals, the collaborative spirit at ICFO prevails. Personal and professional achievements are celebrated. Interaction between research teams as well as with other areas of the institution is encouraged. Interaction not only promotes the cross- fertilization of ideas, but also helps strengthen the ICFO network and create a motivating and stimulating place to work.
OUTSIDE THE LABORATORY: Drawing on its Mediterranean location as well as the culture, art and commerce of Catalonia, Barcelona ranks high as one of the most livable cities in Europe. Just as care is given to ensure that the working environment is conducive to highly productive research, the institution also provides support for adaptation to the area and integration into the ICFO community.
Language Training: The common language within ICFO is English however the local languages are Catalan and Spanish. The language training (Spanish, Catalan or English) offered within ICFO assists ICFOnians in developing and reinforcing communication abilities.
Social Life: A strong sense of community extends beyond the research setting and is fortified by social activities organized throughout the year. Group excursions such as Ski Weekend or the Spring Cycling event are an excellent opportunity to get to know colleagues in a relaxed setting. Other events such as the International Food Festival, Futbolin Championship and Calçotada mix local and international traditions and likewise encourage positive interaction with and between research teams as well as with other area of the institution. The management of ICFO as well as ICONS (ICFO organization and Network of Students) take an active role in the organization of social activities.
