New ICFOnians

Twelve new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of January. Welcome aboard!

February 14, 2018
One visiting scientist, Alberto Delgado, three postdocs, Luis-Guillermo Gerling, Montserrat Porta and Ravi Das, one research engineer, Marc Torrent, two PhD students, Anika Frölian and Jana Ockova, four students, Anamika Karunakaran, Fabian Zwiehoff, Juan Alvarez and Nicola Melchioni, and one member of management, Mauro Martinez, have joined ICFO in the month of January.

Alberto Delgado, who obtained his PhD in Cybernetics in 1996 at the University of Reading – UK, and is now professor at the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a visiting scientist. He is visiting the group and the institute to expand his knowledge on quantum information.

Luis-Guillermo Gerling has joined the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by ICFO Prof. Jordi Martorell as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will work on the fabrication and characterization of transparent photovoltaic cells.

Montserrat Porta holds a 2009 PhD in Health and Life Sciences from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, and now is joining the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by ICFO Prof. Michael Krieg as a postdoctoral researcher. During her stay at ICFO, she will be conducting research on the establishment of genetic methods to create transgenic animals using classical alleles.

Ravi Das, who holds a 2016 PhD in Neuroscience from the Georgia State University, Atlanta, USA, is also joining the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by ICFO Prof. Michael Krieg as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on the mechanical mechanisms of body posture sensing and coordination during proprioception in C. elegans.

Marc Torrent holds an MSc in Photonics from the Universitat Politècnica de Cataunya, and is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a research fellow. His main tasks will be to develop a protocol to reduce noise level in an optomechanical sensor.

Anika Frölian, who obtained her 2017 MSc in the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg – Germany, is coming to ICFO to join the Ultracold Quantum Gases research group led by ICFO Prof. Leticia Tarruell as a PhD student. At ICFO, she will be experimenting with quantum liquid droplets in mixtures of potassium Bose-Einstein condensates.

Jana Ockova, who holds a 2017 MSc in Chemistry from the University College London (UCL) – UK, has joined the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst as a PhD student. At ICFO, she will be working on single molecule ultrafast photonics.

Anamika Karunakaran, who is pursuing an MSc in Photonics from the International School of Photonics and the CUSAT, has joined the Quantum Information with Cold Atoms and Non-classical Light research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell as a student.

Fabian Zwiehoff, who is pursuing an MSc in Applied Physics at TU Berlin, has joined the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student.

Juan Alvarez, who is pursuing a Europhotonics POESII MSc, is joining the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Juan P. Torres as a student. At ICFO he will be working on the design and experimental demonstration of a coherence-based random number generator.

Nicola Melchioni, who is pursuing an MSc in Physics at the University of Pisa, Italy, is joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a student. His work at ICFO will be focused on infrared absorption and emission of 2D materials.

Mauro Martinez is joining ICFO administration as a support for the Human Resources and Education department. Mauro will join the HRE team to provide general administrative support for several ongoing tasks and procedures, mainly in recruiting, labour affairs, academic management and student internships areas.
