ICFO Alumnus Goutam Kumar Samanta receives honor for his contributions to Optics and Photonics

Dr Goutam Kumar Samanta, who did his thesis work at ICFO under the supervision of ICREA Prof Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh, defending his thesis on ‘High Power continuous-wave optical parametric oscillators from visible to near-infrared’ in 2009, has recently been awarded the ICO/ICTP Gallieno Denardo Award.
This award recognizes the work of young researchers from developing countries who are active in optics and photonics research and have contributed to the promotion of research activities in their own or another developing country. The prize was announced by ICTP and the International Commission for Optics (ICO) during their annual Winter College on Optics. It recognizes Samanta’s significant contributions to the field of nonlinear optics, lasers and quantum optics, as well as his efforts in popularizing science among school students in India.
ICO, the International Commission for Optics, and ICTP, the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, established this joint prize in 2000. In September 2007, the ICTP and ICO agreed to dedicate the Award to the memory and legacy of the late Prof. Gallieno Denardo, who greatly contributed to the development of optics research within ICTP and in developing countries.
