New ICFOnians

Twenty eight new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of March and April. Welcome aboard!

Seven Postdocs, Daniel Cano, Enric Gutierrez, Przemyslaw Grzybowski, Remy Avila, Themistoklis Sidiropoulos, Tobias Steinle, Bruno Naylor, two research engineers, Arantxa Albornoz and Klemen Bravhar, Arantxa Albornoz, Klemen Bravhar, four PhD students, Adeel Afridi, Chetan Deshmukh, Matteo Bernardello, Stefano Grava, , two visiting PhD students, Iacopo Torre, Varun Sharma, twelve visiting students, Lorenzo Colombo, Mario Marcos Garcia, Matej Sebek, Javier Luna Labrador, Raul Blázquez García, Marco Wiedemann, Melanie Cazaban, Jorge Delgado, Jie Luan, Wojciech Rogala, Albert Cardenete Massip, Mauricio Arancibia, and one undergraduate student, Yaoming Chu, have joined ICFO during the months of March and April 2017.

Daniel Cano, who obtained his PhD degree in Natural Sciences at the University of Tübingen, in Germany, is joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a postdoctoral fellow. At ICFO, he be focusing his researcher on nanophotonics and quantum optics with graphene.

Enric Gutiérrez, who obtained a PhD in the Biomedicine Program from the University of Barcelona, is now joining the Single Molecule Biophotonics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO María García-Parajo as a postdoctoral fellow. During his stay, he will be studying Siglec1 spatiotemporal organization and consequences for HIV capture by dendritic cells in collaboration with IrsiCaixa. 1411

Przemyslaw Grzybowski, who obtained his PhD in Theoretical Physics at the Faculty of Physics from the Adam Mickiewicz University de Poznań of Poland, is now joining the Quantum Optics Theory group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Dr. Maciej Lewenstein as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be conducting research for the EU FETPRO project QUIC, in collaboration with Prof. Dr. Simon Wall’s and Prof. Lewenstein’s group, on superconductivity driven by phonon nonlinearity.

Remy Avila, who holds a PhD degree in Physics from the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis of France, will be now joining the SNL Facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez, as a postdoctoral fellow. During his stay at ICFO, he will be exploring coupling of Dual Inverted Selective Plane Illumination Microscopy (DISPIM) with an optical tweezers tool under high NA conditions.

Themistoklis Sidiropoulos, who holds a PhD degree from Imperial College of London, is now coming to ICFO to join the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a postdoctoral fellow. At ICFO he will be doing research on attosecond time-resolved X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS).

Tobias Steinle, who received his PhD degree from the 4th Physics Institute of the University of Stuttgart in Germany, will now be joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a postdoctoral researcher. During his stay, he will be conducting research and exploring mid-IR laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED).

Bruno Naylor, who obtained a PhD degree in experimental physics concerning Ultracold Chromium gases from the Université of Paris 13 Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers (LPL) of France, is now joining the Ultra Cold Quantum Gases group led by Prof. Dr. at ICFO Leticia Tarruell as a postdoctoral fellow. During his stay, he will be focusing on physics beyond mean-field in quantum degenerate potassium mixtures.

Arantxa Albornoz, who holds a MSc degree in Organic Chemistry by the University of Barcelona, is joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a research engineer. At ICFO, she will be mainly working on nanoparticle synthesis.

Klemen Bravhar, who obtained a MSc degree in Electrical Engineering from the University College of Southeast Norway, is now joining the Medical Optics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a research engineer. At ICFO, he will working on FPGA programming, board development and electronics for biomedical optical devices.

Adeel Afridi, who obtained his MSc in Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Koç University of Istambul, Turkey, is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be focusing his doctoral research on studying metasurfaces for biotech applications.

Chetan Deshmukh has obtained a MSc degree in Physics and Astronomy by the University of Calgary in Canada, and now joins the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms group led by ICREA Prof. Hugues de Riedmatten as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be exploring cavity enhanced detection of single rare-earth ions in a solid.

Matteo Bernardello, who has received a MSc degree in Telecommunication Engineering from the University of Padova in Italy, is now joining the SLN Facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez as a Phd student. At ICFO, his doctoral thesis will be focused on the development of a multimodal light sheet microscope for in vivo embryo imaging.

Stefano Grava, who obtained his MSc degree in Physics by the University of Padova in Italy, is now joining the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics group led by Prof. Dr. Darrick Chang as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be studying the relationship of many-body physics with photons, trying to develop and apply new theoretical techniques to treat strongly interacting photonic systems out of equilibrium.

Iacopo Torre who is pursuing a PhD in Physics at the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa in Italy, has joined the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a visiting PhD student. At ICFO, he will explore topological nano-photonics.

Varun Sharma, who obtained his MSc in Physics at the Panjab University Chandigarh of India and is currently conducting his doctoral studies at the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad of India, is now joining the Optic Parametric Oscillators group led by Prof. Dr. at ICFO Majid Ebrahim Zadeh as a visiting PhD student. During his stay at ICFO, he will focus on the development and study of new OPO systems for the generation and control of orbital angular momentum in structured beams with wide wavelength tunability.

Lorenzo Colombo, who is pursuing a MSc in Physics Engineering by the Politecnico di Milano in Italy, will be joining the Medical Optics group led by ICREA Prof. Turgut Durduran to work on his master’s thesis. At ICFO, he will be working on neuromonitoring techniques with diffuse optics.

Mario Marcos Garcia Gutiérrez, who is a master student of the Photonics degree by the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, will join the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens. During his stay at ICFO, he will be doing research in efficient readout of graphene photodetectors.

Matej Sebek, who is pursuing a MSc in Optics and Nanostructures from Czech Technical University of Checoslovaquia, is now joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a student. At ICFO, he will be exploring quantum optics and nonlinear optics at atto-scale.

Javier Luna Labrador, who is pursuing a MSc degree Erasmus Mundus in Photonics Engineering, Nanophotonics and Biophotonics from the Aix-Marseille Université in France, is now coming to ICFO to join the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a student. At ICFO, he will be doing research on biomedical optics through computational and experimental methods.

Raul Blázquez García, who is pursuing a MSc in Photonics from the joint program from the UPC, UAB, UB & ICFO will be now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by Prof. Dr. Antonio Acín, as a student. During his stay at ICFO, he will explore machine-learning processes.

Marco Wiedemann, who is obtaining his MSc in Photonics at the Universitat Politécnica of Catalunya UPC, will be now joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student. During his stay, he will be focusing his research on quantum random number generation using VCSELs and LEDs.

Melanie Cazaban, who is pursuing a MSc degree in Fundamental Physics from the Université Toulouse III Paul Sabatier of France, is now joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student. At ICFO, she will be working on the sensing of particles, micro-organisms and biomarkers using the camera of a mobile phone.

Jorge Delgado, who is obtaining the Master in Photonics degree from the joint program by the UPC, UAB, UB and ICFO, is now joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a student. During his stay at ICFO, he will be working on SBE simulations.

Jie Luan, a MSc student in Photonics from the joint program by the UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO, is now joining the Quantum Information with Cold Atoms and Non-classical Light group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell, as a student. During his stay at ICFO, he will be exploring active control of magnetic fields for atomic physics experiments.

Wojciech Rogala, who is pursuing a Master degree in Photonics from the joint program of the UPC, UAB, UB and ICFO, is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by Prof. Dr. Antonio Acín as a student. At ICFO, he will be exploring the development of machine learning processes.

Albert Cardenete Massip, who received his BSc degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, will be joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a master student. During his stay at ICFO, he will be doing research on all-magnetic trapping experiments for nanoparticles with a downsized Ioffe-Pritchard trap.

Mauricio Arancibia, who is obtaining his MSc in Photonics degree from the joint program of the UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO, is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as student. At ICFO, he will be conducting his doctoral research on the development of a feedback control system for a Paul trap.

Yaoming Chu as a current BSc student in Physics at Huazhong University of Science and Technology of China, is now coming to join the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics group led by Prof. Dr. Darrick Chang. During his stay at ICFO, he will be doing research on basic analytical and numerical techniques to study the dynamics of atoms interacting via nanophotonic structures.
