New Tenured Group Leader

Prof. Darrick Chang awarded tenure at ICFO

July 12, 2017
Prof. Darrick Chang, leader of the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics at ICFO, has been awarded tenure at ICFO by the Board of Trustees of the institute.

Prof. Chang is originally from Texas (USA). He received his PhD from Harvard University, where he worked on plasmonic techniques to strongly couple single quantum emitters to single photons. He went on to continue his research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Quantum Information at Caltech, where he collaborated with Professors Jeff Kimble and Oskar Painter to observe and manipulate the quantum interaction between light and nano-mechanical systems. Darrick arrived at ICFO in 2011 as a NEST Fellow endowed by the Cellex Foundation Barcelona to support outstandingly talented and creative young group leaders. He founded his research group focusing on optical and mechanical control of graphene, development of trapping techniques at the nanoscale, and the study of interactions of atoms coupled to nanophotonic systems. While Prof. Chang’s work is theoretical, he collaborates with leading experimental groups to bring these ideas to reality. Frequent collaborators include the Kimble and Painter groups at Caltech, Prof. Mikhail Lukin (Harvard) and Prof. Cindy Regal (JILA).

In December 2014, the European Research Council awarded Darrick the prestigious ERC Starting Grant to pursue the project “Frontiers of Quantum Atom-Light Interactions (FoQAL)”, which aims to completely re-define our ability to control light-matter interactions at the quantum level. He has subsequently also coordinated the FP7 European Collaborative Project GRASP (Graphene-Based Single-Photon Nonlinear Optical Devices) and the H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Project LANTERN (Light-Atom Interactions in Nanophotonic Structures).
