New ICFOnians

Twenty-four new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of February. Welcome aboard!

Two visiting scientists, Chaitanya Suddapalli and Gonçalo Figueira, one postdoc, Luc Dümpelmann, one research engineer, Chandan Samanta, nine PhD students, Andrés de los Rios, Christian Knapp, Constanza Sansierra, Francesco Andreoli, Hamidreza Fayaz, Hani Awwad, Nicolas Mateos, Robin Camphausen and Valerio DiGiulio, two visiting PhD students, Luigi Seveso and Xi Chen, eight students, Alexander Le Bon, Gonzalo Podgaezky, Jorge Madrid, Manuel Fernandez, Matěj Hejda, Michael Evans, Sofia Martinez and Victor Lopez, and one member of management, Marta Gimenez-Zapiola, have joined ICFO in the month of February.

Chaitanya Suddapalli, who is currently working in Radiantis, is coming back to ICFO as a visiting scientist in the Optical Parametric Oscillators research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh. He will be at ICFO for scientific exchanges and discussion, as well as assistance in experimental work.

Gonçalo Figueira, who obtained his PhD in Physics in 2001 at the Technical University of Lisbon, and is now a researcher in the Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear, is coming to ICFO to join the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a visiting scientist.

Luc Dümpelmann, with a 2017 PhD in Experimental Physics from ETH Zurich-Switzerland, has joined the Optoelectronics research group led by ICFO Prof. Valerio Pruneri as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will work on the development of lens-free interferometric microscopes.

Chandan Samanta holds an MSc in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India, and is now pursuing a PhD in the Indian Institute of Science. He is now joining the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by ICFO Prof. Adrian Bachtold as a research engineer. His main tasks will be to do low temperature measurements of nanotube resonators.

Andres de los Rios, who obtained his 2017 MSc in Photonics from the Aix Marseille University / Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, is coming to ICFO to join the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a PhD student. His thesis will focus on levitation optomechanics for ultrasensitive force sensing.

Christian Knapp, who holds a 2015 Master of Science, Molecular Biology at University of Vienna, Austria, has joined the SLN Facility under ICFO prof. Stefan Wieser as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be working on mchanosensing of the nucleus revealed by Lattice Light Sheet Microscopy.

Constanza Sansierra, who has a 2016 MSc from the Universidad Nacional de San Martín, Argentina, has joined the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by ICFO Prof. Jordi Martorell as a PhD student.

Francesco Andreoli, who graduated with an MSc from Rome University in 2017, is now joining the Theoretical Quantum-Nano Photonics research group led by ICFO Prof. Darrick Chang as a PhD student.

Hamidreza Fayaz, who obtained a 2016 M.A.Sc. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Toronto - Canada, has joined the Low-Dimensional Quantum Materials research group led by ICFO Prof. Dmitri Efetov as a PhD student.

Hani Awwad, with a 2017 MSc from University Heinrich Heine, Germany, has joined the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by ICFO Prof. Adrian Bachtold as a PhD student. At ICFO he will focus on nanotube resonators with helium.

Nicolas Mateos, who obtained a 2017 M.Sc. Biomedical Engineering from University of Twente (NL), has joined the Single Molecule Biophotonics group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maria García-Parajo as a PhD student. Nicolas will work on the implementation of multicolor single particle for monitoring dynamic intracellular events in living cells. He will apply this new technique together with SR microscopy on several membrane receptors as well as nuclear org.

Robin Camphausen, who has a 2017 Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts from University of Sydney- Australia, is joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be doing research on quantum enhanced microscope and random walks.

Valerio Di Giulio, who obtained in 2017 a Master in Theoretical Physics at University of Rome “La Sapienza“, has joined the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Javier Garcia de Abajo as a PhD student.

Luigi Seveso, who is pursuing a PhD in the Universita degli Studi di Milano, Italy, has joined the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acin as a visiting PhD student. At ICFO, he will be working on the marginal problem in quantum physics.

Xi Chen, who is pursuing a PhD in Physics at the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, China, has joined the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting PhD student. At ICFO, he will be working on tensor networks and their applications for frustrated systems in 2D (kagome like models) and 3D (spin ice models and perovskites).

Alexander Le Bon, who is pursuing an MSc in Photonics from UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO, is joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a student. His tasks at ICFO will involve optofluidic functionalities based on nano-optical resonators.

Gonzalo Podgaezky, who is pursuing a BIST - UPF Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences, is joining the SLN Facility Lab team research group led by ICFO Prof. Pablo Loza as a student. He will work on Raman Enhanced Light Sheet Microscopy.

Jorge Madrid, who is pursuing an MSc in Biomedical Engineering, Universidad de los Andes, has also joined the SLN Facility Lab team research group led by ICFO Prof. Pablo Loza as a student. His work is to measure calcium wave signals form neuronal cultures in a light sheet microscope using wavefront coding techniques.

Manuel Fernandez, who is pursuing a BSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, has joined the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student. His tasks will include working on nano-structured hybrid material optical surfaces.

Matěj Hejda, who is pursuing an MSc in Nanotechnology, Technical University of Liberec, is joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student. At ICFO he will be working on lens free phase microscopy for detection of minute quantity of materials.

Michael Evans, who is pursuing an MSc in Photonics at the UPC, UB, UAB & ICFO, is joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a student. His work at ICFO will be focused on graphene nano-optoelectronics.

Sofia Martinez, who is pursuing a BSc degree in Physics Engineering, UPC, has joined the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student. At ICFO, she will be working on nano-structured optical surfaces.

Victor Lopez, who is pursuing an MSc in Photonics from UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO, is joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acin as a student. His tasks at ICFO will involve working on Bell inequalities and many-body quantum systems.

Marta Gimenez-Zapiola is joining ICFO administration as a new lawyer. She has a lawyer degree from the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina.
