CYTO-WATER: Rapid, flexible water analysis creates industry stir

ICFO participated in H2020 project highlighted by CORDIS.

November 23, 2018
CYTO-WATER, a project funded by the Horizon 2020 EU Research and Innovation program, was launched to deploy for the first time a new imaging cytometer platform capable of detecting minute quantity of the microorganisms Legionella and Escherichia coli, among others, in industrial and environmental waters.

Three years after the project launch, the consortium has created a new platform that functions with the use of a new fluorescence image cytometer that identifies the presence of a microorganism based on the emitted fluorescence. Among the many advantages of this platform that make it highly promising for real markets are its portability, speed of diagnosis of threats, adaptability to detect any waterborne microorganism, and cost effectiveness compared to other spot sampling techniques.

Following official completion of the project in May 2018, new business and exploitation plans are being drawn up to consider how manufacturing costs can be further refined. Commercial analyses will also be conducted to determine the level of customer demand for the platform and its individual modules.

CORDIS has recently published a “Results in Brief” article on this project outlining the opportunities that this new platform presents for improvements in public health as well market prospects.
