Inauguration of the Espai Roqué at ICFO

ICFO will host an exhibition created and conceived by the renowned sculptor Roqué, inspired by light

November 18, 2019

On November 15th, 2019, representatives of the world of culture, friends and relatives of the deceased Agustí Roqué met at ICFO for the inauguration of a permanent exhibition space “Espai Roqué”, where the works of the artist will be permanently exposed in a mock-up format designed.

Born in Barcelona in 1942 and an internationally renowned sculptor and outstanding representative of contemporary sculpture, Agustí Roqué carried out important projects and works of public sculpture in Europe and the United States, with numerous exhibitions at prestigious museums and galleries. With the need of evolving and exploring throughout his career, Roqué arrived at the ICFO in 2014 looking for the scientific context for an exhibition about an increasingly present phenomenon in his studies, and to which he wanted to pay a particular tribute or homage: light.

ICFO participated with enthusiasm in the project, bringing scientific concepts that provided metaphorical inspiration for the creativity of the artist. Through intense dialogues with former ICFOnian from the KTT unit Dr. Marta García-Matos and the director of ICFO, Lluís Torner, Roqué deepened in the science and essence of light, space and the universe, using these new ideas to become inspired and use different materials and forms for his works that composed the sculptural project entitled "There’s a crack in everything, that’s how the light gets in".

The final large-scale format sculptures, inspired by light, were intended to be exhibited at the 57th Venice Biennial, a project that was not materialized due to the artist’s unexpected death in February 2017.

The models of the nine sculptures created in this project will be permanently exhibited at ICFO’s facilities in Castelldefels, paying tribute to the memory of the artist and his work.
