ICFO researcher Dr. Christian Gogolin is awarded the Ernst-Reuter-Prize of the Freie Universität Berlin for his extraordinary PhD thesis dissertation. Every year since 1985 and endowed by the Ernst-Reuter-Gesellschaft der Freunde, Förderer und Ehemaligen der Freien Universität e.V., the Freie Universität delivers the Ernst-Reuter-Prize. On December 4th, which is the anniversary of the university’s founding day in 1948, prizes are awarded to young scholars who have shown to accomplish outstanding and groundbreaking dissertations at Freie Universität Berlin in their respective fields from the four different discipline groups. Each awarded dissertation selected by the committee receives a cash prize of 5,000 euros.

More than 110 recipients have received this award since its first edition. This year ICFO researcher Dr. Christian Gogolin, Postdoctoral Researcher and MPQ-ICFO Fellow, who joined the Quantum Optics Theory and Quantum Information Theory research groups led by ICREA Prof. Maciej Lewenstein and Antonio Acín respectively, has been honoured with this award for his outstanding achievements presented in his final thesis dissertation in 2014 as one of the five awardees of this years.

Dr. Gogolin’s thesis entitled “Equilibration, thermalisation, and the emergence of statistical mechanics in closed quantum systems“, is a summary of his work, which focused on studying the emergence of statistical and thermodynamic behaviour in quantum many-body systems. At ICFO, he is continuing this line of research as well as working on new projects in areas such as ultra-cold ion physics, quantum metrology, and condensed matter physics.

Congratulations Christian for this outstanding award!!!
