Our goal is to explore new physical phenomena using nanomechanical resonators based on single nanoscale objects, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene. A carbon nanotube resonator can be described as a nanoscale guitar string, whereas a graphene resonator can be thought of as a drum membrane that is only one atom thick. Because of their small size, these resonators display unique properties. They can detect both tiny forces and miniscule masses with exquisite sensitivities. In addition, the vibrations of these resonators can be efficiently coupled to spins, electrons, and photons.
