Fundamentals and Applications of the Interaction between Free Electrons and Optical Fields
September 5th, 2017 JAVIER GARCÍA DE ABAJO Nanophotonics Theory
ICFO-The Institute of Photonic Sciences

The interaction of visible light and free electrons is extremely week in free space, giving rise to phenomena such as diffraction of electrons by light. This interaction can be dramatically enhanced by the presence of material nanostructures, an effect that has been recently exploited to visualize optical fields with unbeaten nanometer and femtosecond resolutions. In this lecture, we will review the fundamental aspects of this interaction, overview current experiments, and discuss new physics emerging from virtual and real photon exchanges experienced by free electrons in the presence of illuminated nanostructures.
