Coherent and incoherent learning of a unitary transformation

The notion of quantum learning has been used in literature to refer to the studying of various aspects of “learning about” quantum systems.

In this talk, I will first briefly introduce the framework generalized in fully quantum machine learning, including classification of quantum states and learning of quantum evolution. Then I will mainly talk about the learning of a unitary transformation, which I’m now working on.

A key question in this scenario is how to optimally retrieve the target unitary transformation from the trained quantum memory. We show with examples that there exists sets of unitary gates for which the optimal quantum learning strategy, where the system and the memory interact coherently, outperforms every classical strategy, where the memory is measured and the system undergoes an operation depending on the outcome.
