Barcelona Medical Photonics Network (BMPN): Bridging Brain Science and Clinical Care

The Barcelona Medical Photonics Network aims to bring cutting-edge photonic technologies to clinical research and ultimately to routine clinical use through interdisciplinary cooperation among sixteen prominent institutions in Barcelona.  It is part of the broader “Light for Health” framework of activities led by ICFO, which connects photonics with life sciences, medicine, and industry.

On Tuesday, 4 November 2025, the BMPN will host its Annual Meeting under the topic "Bridging Brain Science and Clinical Care". The goal of the event is to bring members of the BMPN network and others together to strengthen existing collaborations and initiate new ones.

The meeting will highlight advances across neurophotonics, neuroimmunology, brain circuit analysis and modulation, photopharmacology, and neurovascular research, as well as innovative approaches to vision and retinal neuroscience. Presentations will feature a wide spectrum of cutting-edge methodologies: from optical and photonic imaging to optogenetics, pharmacological modulation, organoid models, and translational clinical studies, thus illustrating how diverse disciplines converge to bridge fundamental brain science with clinical care.

The BMPN annual gathering will feature contributions from leading experts in these fields, including Prof. Josep Dalmau (Hospital Clínic / IDIBAPS / Caixa Research Institute), Prof. Joseph Culver (Washington University), Dr. Mercè Masana (UB /IDIBAPS), Prof. Francisco Ciruela (UB / IDIBELL), Dr. Montse Solé (UAB), and Dr. Zohreh Hosseinzadeh (Radboud University Medical Center). The detailed agenda will be announced soon.

For the first time, the BMPN Annual Meeting will be hosted at ICFO. Following three successful editions at partner institutions across Barcelona, we are pleased to welcome collaborators, colleagues, and the wider community to our premises to foster interaction and collaboration. Hosting the event at ICFO further facilitates continuity with the MINDLAB workshop, as this fourth edition of the meeting will also launch the second edition of MINDLAB (“Manipulating and Investigating Neural Dynamics for Learning and Ageing in the Brain”). Organized by ICFO, MINDLAB is a four-day interdisciplinary training program for PhD students and postdoctoral researchers, offering theoretical and practical sessions to master state-of-the-art photonic technologies for studying the brain. Thus, alongside clinicians, technology developers, and innovation managers from BMPN and beyond, ICFO Auditorium will also gather young talent from across Europe, enabling attendees to take full advantage of both events.

This event is in-person and open to everyone interested. A coffee break and a standing lunch will be provided to encourage informal discussions and networking.

If you would like to attend the meeting, please register before the 28th of October 2025.
