WORKSHOP: Ideas that Connect- Crafting presentations that spark collaborations

Scientific collaborations, especially across disciplines, are at the heart of scientific progress. The foundations for establishing and thriving in such collaborations lie in clear, effective, and authentic communication, particularly through oral presentations.

Through interactive exercises and a concise, no-nonsense approach, this workshop aims to teach participants how to plan, design, create, and deliver talks that resonate — presentations that not only inform but invite others to connect and collaborate.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW:

While science is grounded in objectivity and facts, collaborations involve a personal element and begin with finding common ground across different perspectives. Through practical exercises, you will gain insight into these dynamics. Such insights will help you to approach presentations with a clear sense of purpose, enabling you to identify and connect to the right audience, define your talk’s goals, and craft clear scientific messages.

Having identified a clear purpose and message for your presentation, we will focus on selecting the precise content that best supports your claims, structuring it in a straightforward way so your audience can follow effortlessly, and creating clear slides (if used) that convey your messages in the most effective way.

GOAL: By the end of the workshop, you will be equipped to present your science with clarity and impact, igniting connections and collaborations that transcend disciplines.

TARGET: All ICFOnians interested in participating in this workshop may register, with preference given to Science Capsules speakers and postdoctoral researchers.

TRAINER:  Dr. Denitza Denkova

Denitza is a senior postdoc at ICFO (SLN team), with a long term experience in driving international cross-disciplinary collaborations both in academic and in industrial contexts. She is also a trainer in scientific communication, with focus on coaching effective oral presentations and fostering productive collaborations. Both Denitza and the students she has coached have received numerous Best poster and Best oral presentation prizes at various conferences.

Previously, Denitza led a 2.5-year collaboration-strengthening initiative at the Centre for Nanoscale BioPhotonics (CNBP), Australia—a centre uniting over 250 researchers across three cities. Together with a multi-disciplinary team, they developed an internal online collaboration platform that received CNBP’s Commercialization Award (2017).
