Quantum metrology and quantum control with cold spin ensembles

Description of Activities:

We study the limits of sensitive measurement using ensembles of cold, trapped atoms as both a sensor and an object of study. We use spin squeezing to improve the sensitivity of magnetic measurements, quantum non-demolition measurements to generate entanglement among millions of atoms, and quantum control techniques to “cool,” i.e. reduce the entropy of, an atomic spin ensemble. These techniques have potential applications in quantum optics such as quantum simulations and generation of new quantum states.
