The Secretary of Digital Policies of the Generalitat de Catalunya visits ICFO
The delegation Secretary of Digital Policies of the Generalitat de Catalunya, presided by Maria Galindo visit the institute to gain insight on the ongoing projects centered on Quantum Technologies and future perspectives in the field.
On May 9th, ICFO was pleased to welcome to our institute the Secretary of Digital Policies of the Generalitat de Catalunya, Maria Galindo, at the head of a delegation made up of the Director General of Digital Economy and Society, Sandra Ruiz; the Head of the Digital Sector Promotion Area, Guillermo Villuendas, and the Innovation Manager, Sergi Masip. After having carried out successful collaborations between ICFO and the Secretariat of Digital Policies on different projects related to quantum technologies in the fields of communications, detection, simulations, space and education, among others, the visit focused on assessing the current status of ongoing projects funded within the framework of government initiatives, gaining first-hand information on the tangible results achieved so far and learning about ICFO's future strategic roadmap.
The delegation was received by the Director of ICFO, Oriol Romero-Isart, together with the founding director, Lluís Torner, the Vice Director of Innovation, Sponsored Research and Public Engagement, Silvia Carrasco, the Chief Financial and Compliance Officer, Mercé Carrasco, and representatives of the KTT and projects units, gave an overview of the ongoing projects in quantum techs, in particular in the area of quantum communication and simulation.
The visit included a tour to the institute’s state-of-the-art laboratories, such as the lab led by ICREA Prof at ICFO Leticia Tarruell, which has developed a unique Quantum Simulator based on ultra-cold atoms to carry out frontier simulations of individual atoms. They then visited the lab led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten, expert in the field of Quantum Memories and whose team is building Quantum Repeaters for the future Quantum Internet.
The visit concluded with a tour of the facilities of the spin-off companies Quside and LuxQuanta, where the institutional visitors had the opportunity to engage and interact with the company members to see at first hand the technology that has been developed and is currently being commercialized, showcasing how foundational research is being transferred into market-ready solutions.
