Photonic biosensor for doping

Dr. Gonçal Badenes talked about the last advances in the Nanophotonics group

September 15, 2005
The Nanophotonics Devices group at ICFO, led by Dr. Gonçal Badenes, has done the first steps to develop what could be in a near future a very precise and practical biosensor to detect some substances in humans and animals. The research based in the photonic properties of gold nanoparticles, is being carried out by Dr. Romain Quidant in collaboration with the Applied Molecular Receptors Group from the IIQAB-CSIC. Dr. Quidant has obtained excellent quantitative and discriminating results with stanozolol, an anabolic steroid illegally used by athletes and for growth enhancement in animals.

Dr. Badenes, who participated in a photonics summer school on Photonics and Nanophotonics in northern Spain, exposed the last advancements and results obtained by his group at ICFO. The local newspaper, Alerta de Cantabria, echoed about the innovation.
