RAIS project final workshop
The final H2020 RAIS project workshop takes place in Barcelona to present a Sepsis detection device based on photonics technology.

On November 6-7th, the UAB Casa de Convalencia at the Hospital Sant Pau celebrated the closing workshop of the Horizon 2020 project RAIS -Scalable, a projected aimed to develop a point-of-care and label free microarray platform for rapid detection of Sepsis.
The diagnosis and management of acute Sepsis is a critical area where fast and accurate results can translate into life changing health outcomes for individuals. Officially launched in January 2015, the partners of this initiative have spent the past three years working on developing a new point-of-care label-free microarray platform and validate it for quantifying levels of specific Sepsis’ biomarkers.
The project has been coordinated by ICREA Professor at ICFO Valerio Pruneri, in collaboration with companies and institutes from Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Germany, Belgium, and the United Kingdom. As part of the closing workshop, the different research teams presented their results and achievements to a selected audience of clinicians, who had a chance to see and test the device during a on-hands prototype demonstrations to experience live the capabilities and functionalities of the device.
The demonstration achieved during the workshop showed that the technology developed during these 3 years is capable of detecting micro-ribonucleic acids (microRNAs), interleukins and other specific biomarkers associated with Sepsis using a few microliters of blood or serum samples. Not only can it detect these biomarkers very accurately but it can also retrieve the samples results in less than an hour, which would reduce the analysis costs per patient.
Expected to become a point-of-care device for hospitals, the new technology developed by the RAIS project will aim to reduce the Sepsis mortality rate of more than 70%, with estimated cost savings of several billion Euros per year as a consequence of shorter hospital stays, reduced use of unnecessary drugs and lower associated insurance bills.
