ICFOnians and the international scientific community in general mourn the loss of Professor Fotis Kafatos who passed away last week.
In addition to world-class contributions to biology, he made an indelible mark on the research community in his role as the founding president of the European Research Council, (December 2005 - March 2010).
In March 2014, he was honoured as one of the founders of the ERC with an award from ACER – the Association of Research Centers of Catalonia. This special prize was given to recognize individuals and/or institutions that have distinguished themselves by their active support and promotion of cutting-edge research as an engine for development, emphasizing its social and economic importance. Prof Kafatos will be remembered for years to come by his friends and colleagues, but also by the European scientific community as a whole.
