Prof. Ignacio Cirac receives the prestigious award from the German Physical Society

Prof. Ignacio Cirac, the head of the Theory Division and Director of the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics, has been named the recipient of the Max-Planck medal, the most prestigious award of the German Physical Society in the area of theoretical physics. Cirac, whose research interests range from fundamental mathematical calculations in quantum information theory, modelling of quantum many-body systems to concepts for the implementation of quantum optical systems, is recognized with this medal for his groundbreaking contributions to the field of quantum information and quantum optics.
The award is given annually to a brilliant scientist who is following in the tracks of Max Planck. Prof. Cirac will receive the prize – a handwritten certificate on parchment with the wording of the eulogy, and a gold medal bearing a portrait of Max Planck –at an award ceremony on March 7, 2018 on the occasion of the annual meeting of the DPG in Erlangen.
Prof. Cirac obtained a Ph.D. degree in Fundamental Physics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Expert in quantum computing and its applications in the field of information, his research is focused on the quantum information theory. His work has been the subject of many awards, including the Prince of Asturias Prize for Scientific and Technical Research in 2006, the National Prize for Research Blas Cabrera in 2007, the Franklin Medal in 2010, the Niels Bohr Medal in 2013, the Wolf Prize in 2013 and, recently, the Theoretical Physics Prize of the city of Hamburg. He is also a Distinguished Invited Professor at ICFO and President of the institute’s Scientific Advisory Board.
