New ICFOnians

Twenty-five new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of October. Welcome aboard!

Five postdoctoral researchers, seven PhD students, two research engineers, nine students, one visiting PhD student and one member of administration have joined ICFO during the month of October.

Domenico de Fazio, who holds a 2017 PhD in Electrical Engineering, is coming to ICFO as a Postdoctoral researcher at the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens. At ICFO he will be working on graphene and QD photodetectors.

Ignasi Burgues, who obtained a 2014 PhD in Chemistry from the UAB, is coming to ICFO to join the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Gerasimos Konstantatos as a Postdoctoral researcher. His position will allow him to work on the development of solution processed nanocrystal solar cells.

Moniruzzaman Shaikh holds a 2018 Ph.D. in Physics from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai, India, and is now joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a Postdoctoral researcher. His main tasks will involve attosecond XAFS in molecules.

Nick Moore, who holds a 2018 PhD in Physics from Tohoku University - Japan, is coming to ICFO as a Postdoctoral researcher at the Low-Dimensional Quantum Materials research group led by ICFO prof. Dmitri Efetov.

Samuele Grandi, who obtained a 2017 PhD in Physics at Imperial College London -UK, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten as a Postdoctoral researcher. His position will allow him to work on integrated quantum memories.

Alexia Stollmann holds a 2018 Master of Mechanical Engineering from the Swiss Federal Institude of Technology (ETH)- Switzerland, and is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Quidant as a PhD student. Her thesis will focus on on-a-chip manipulation and detection of exosomes.

Arturo Villegas, who holds a 2018 MSc from Delft- the Netherlands, is coming to ICFO as a new PhD student at the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by ICFO prof. Juan P. Torres. At ICFO he will be working on light - matter interplay for optical metrology beyond the classical spatial resolution limits.

Christina Graham, who obtained a 2018 MSc in Materials Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh, is coming to ICFO to join the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Pruneri as a PhD student. Her position will allow her to work on optical surfaces using atomically thick materials and nano-structuring.

Korbinian Kottmann holds a 2018 MsC in Physics from University Ulm- Germany, and is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a PhD student. He will work between Lewenstein and Acin’s groups.

Olaf Zimmermann, who holds a 2018 Physics MSc from Ulm University, Germany, is coming to ICFO as a PhD student at the Low-Dimensional Quantum Materials research group led by ICFO prof. Dmitri Efetov. At ICFO he will be working on single photon detection projects.

Paolo Abiuso, who obtained a 2018 Master in Theoretical Physics at the University of Pisa- Italy, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a PhD student.

Shanmukh Majji is now joining the Functional Optoelectronic Nanomaterials research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Gerasimos Konstantatos as a PhD student. His main tasks will involve working on solution-processed quantum dot thermophotovoltaics.

Mariela Baron, who holds a 2018 M.Sc in Telecommunications, University de los Andes (ULA) Venezuela, is coming to ICFO as a research engineer at the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri. At ICFO she will be working on signal processing and electronic interfaces for quantum communication and imaging.

Neus Sanfeliu, who obtained an MSc in Biology from Universitat de Barcelona, is coming to ICFO to join the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by ICFO Prof. Michael Krieg as a research engineer.

Ainoa Guinart Planellas is pursuing an MSc in Interdisciplinary Research from the UPF and BIST, and is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a student.

Blanca Belsa Carne, who is pursuing an MSc in Interdisciplinary Research from the UPF and BIST, is coming to ICFO as a student it the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert.

Daniel Allepuz Requena, who is working towards a Physics degree from the Universitat de Barcelona, is coming to ICFO to join the Ultracold Quantum Gases research group led by ICFO Prof. Leticia Tarruell as a student. His position will allow him to work on the generation of holographic traps for quantum gases using digital micromirror devices.

David Jacobs is pursuing a Physics MSc from the University of Hamburg, and is now joining the Ultracold Quantum Gases research group led by ICFO prof. Leticia Tarruell as a student. His main tasks will involve building a new experimental setup for the study of ultracold alkali-earth atoms in controllable optical traps.

Eliza Cornell, who is working towards a MSc in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten. At ICFO she will be working on laser stabilization for experiments with cold Rydberg atoms.

Laura Moreno Carbonell, who is pursuing a degree in industrial design engineering from Elisava, is coming to ICFO to join the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a student. Her position will allow her to work on the design of a DoDs device.

Ricard Ravell Rodriguez is working towards an MSc in Photonics from the UPC, and is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a student.

Sofia Martinez Galvez, who is pursuing an MSc in Interdisciplinary Research from the UPF and BIST, is coming to ICFO as a student at the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri.

Umberto Matera, who is working towards a degree in Materials and Nanotechnology from the University of Pisa, is coming to ICFO to join the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student. His position will allow him to work on ultrathin materials for tunable optical surfaces.

Wei Du is pursuing a PhD degree at the East China Normal University I Shanghai - China, and is now joining the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led by ICREA prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell as a visiting PhD student. His main tasks will involve squeezing and entanglement generation in high-density atomic vapors.

Isabel Penon Bosom is coming to ICFO as a Financial Accountant at the Finance unit.
