New ICFOnians

Nine new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of December. Welcome aboard!

January 08, 2020

One visiting scientist, four postdoctoral researchers, two PhD students, one visiting PhD student and one student have joined ICFO during the month of December.

Pir Sieranott, who is a researcher at the Jagiellonian University, Poland, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting scientist. His position will allow him to work on quantum many body problems and quantum simulators.

Marcelo Ciappina, who holds a 2005 PhD in Physics from Balseiro Institute - Universidad Nacional de Cuyo, Argentina, is coming to ICFO as a postdoctoral researcher at the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA professor at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein. At ICFO, he will be working on quantum simulators of attoscience with cold atoms and vice versa.

Parmeshwar Prasad holds a 2019 PhD from the Indian Institute of Science, India, and is now joining the Quantum NanoMechanics research group led by ICFO prof. Adrian Bachtold as a postdoctoral researcher. His main tasks will involve twisted graphene stacks.

Alfredo Ongaro, who holds a 2019 PhD from Heriot Watt University, UK, is coming to ICFO as a postdoctoral researcher at the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA professor at ICFO Valerio Pruneri. At ICFO, he will be working on microfluidics for bio applications.

Gyanendra Kumar, who holds a 2016 PhD in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, India, is coming to ICFO as a postdoctoral researcher at the Optical Parametric Oscillators research group led by ICREA professor at ICFO Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh. At ICFO, he will be working on the design and development of novel light sources based on optical parametric frequency conversion and applications to imaging and spectroscopy.

Ediz Herkert, who obtained a 2019 MSc in Photonic Engineering at the University of Stuttgart, Germany, is coming to ICFO to join the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maria Garcia-Parajo as a PhD student. His position will allow him to work on the European ITN called MUSIQ. He will be working on the implementation of paralleled photonic antennas for high throughput single molecule binding essays.

Francisco Bernal holds a 2019 MSc in Optics from the Instituto Nacional de Astrofísica, Óptica y Electrónica (INAOE), Mexico, and is now joining the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by ICFO prof. Jordi Martorell as a PhD student.

Aleksandra Sierant, who holds a 2015 MSc of Physics from the Jagiellonian University, Poland, is coming to ICFO as a visiting PhD student at the Atomic Quantum Optics research group led by ICREA professor at ICFO Morgan Mitchell. At ICFO, she will be working on experimental quantum optics with cold atoms.

Amir Rahmani, who is working towards an MSc in Photonics, Shahid Beheshti University, Iran, is coming to ICFO as a student at the SLN Facility research group led by ICFO professor Stefan Wieser.
