ICFO hosts the kick-off a new collaborative project within the 7th Framework Programme of the European Community. ICFO will launch in June 2008 the new MIRSURG (Mid-Infrared Solid-State Laser Systems for Minimally Invasive Surgery) collaborative project within the European Community’s Seventh Framework Programme. The collaborative project, involving Prof. Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh and his team, consists of a consortium of 9 research groups from 7 member states, including 5 academic institutions and 4 industrial partners. The three-year research program aims to develop a new generation of advanced mid-infrared solid-state laser systems for applications in minimally invasive surgery. The project is expected to lead to the achievement of a new class of advanced mid-infrared light sources as practical replacements for free-electron lasers in biomedical applications, particularly neurosurgery and ophthalmology.
