ICFO at ESOF 2008

“The amazing quantum world
of ultra-cold matter” is the title
of the ICFO Scientific Session at ESOF.

July 22, 2008
The concept of absolute zero is the subject of the Scientific Session ICFO has organized within the Euro Science Open Forum (ESOF) 2008. ICFO group leaders Jürgen Eschner and Maciej Lewenstein will be respectively chair and speaker at this session. The two other speakers will be Christophe Salomon (Ecole Normale Superieure, France) and Christopher Foot (University of Oxford, UK). The session will be moderated by Spanish journalist and writer Eduardo Punset and is organized in collaboration with the European Science Foundation (ESF).

Physics tells us that absolute zero cannot be reached, but only approached, and the closer one gets, the more interesting phenomena one finds. Nowadays, temperatures of less than a millionth of a degree above absolute zero can be produced in laboratories. Quantum mechanics rules at such temperatures and predicts, for example, that particles may combine into a new state of matter called Bose-Einstein condensate or BEC. Since production of the first BEC atoms in 1995, there have been enormous advances in producing and manipulating quantum matter, and exciting applications have been proposed in diverse areas ranging from ultra-high precision metrology to quantum information technology.
