ESA Quantum Transceiver Update in Vienna

Prof. Valerio Pruneri guest speaker at the Space-Quest topical meeting in Vienna.

October 13, 2008
Prof. Valerio Pruneri was invited to give a talk on the quantum transceiver project during the Space-Quest topical meeting held at Vienna University last October 7th. Space-Quest (QUantum Entanglement for Space ExperimenTs ) is a European Space Agency (ESA) Topical Team formed by renowned scientists in the field of quantum optics and quantum information from Austria, Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Spain. The meeting in Vienna was aimed at a general review of the latest advances in the research of this area.

The quantum transceiver is a quantum information device that could possibly provide a channel for ultra-safe communication in space. ESA has assigned its design and development to a consortium of companies and research centers in Spain, including ICFO -involving in particular Prof. Valerio Pruneri’s, Prof. Juan P. Torres’ and Prof. Morgan Mitchell’s groups. The fabrication of the first prototype is scheduled for 2010. Prof. Pruneri has provided the Space-Quest partners in Vienna with an update on the progress that has been made in the project.
