Fascination of light in Laser Focus World

The magazine highlights ICFO’s efforts to bring top-level research to schoolchildren.

February 09, 2009
Laser Focus World reports on the exhibition “Fascination of light”, that took place at ICFO from November 12 to December 3, 2008. The article by Jason Palmer highlights the high participation of the general public. Over a hundred people attended although the exhibition was primarily aimed at and advertised to schools. “In principle, the exhibition was directed to ages from 8 through 17, but I would say that we’ve had people of all ages and that they all enjoyed it, of course, in a different way, but they all enjoyed it,” says Dr. Alejandra Valencia, ICFO researcher and project manager for Fascination of Light @ ICFO. She coordinated the exhibition, together with the ICFO-based student network ICONS. “We’re very happy because we’re getting good feedback,” she adds. “The kids made comments like, ‘I thought light was only useful to illuminate rooms’; ‘I didn’t know you could do all these things with light.’ And posed questions like, ‘What do I have to study if I’d like to work in this field?’ Definitely, the exhibition has achieved its objective.”
