New ICFOnians

New researchers and staff members have joined ICFO.

March 30, 2009
One visiting scientist, Dr. Servando Lopez; one visiting student, Mr. Cristian Prommesberger; two PhD students, Mr. Philipp Hauke and Mr. Lars Würflinger; three Master in Photonics students from Strasbourg, Mr. Nicolas Rahuel, Ms. Amel Houyou, and Mr. Alexandre Thai; one Electronic Workshop technician, Mr. Daniel Mitrani; and a new member of the Administration area, Mr. Rafael Giner, have joined ICFO.

Dr. Servando Lopez is a visiting scientist from the Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico. He will spend a year in Prof. Lluís Torner’s group, working on new types of optical lattices and their application to quantum information, optical solitons and optical tweezers.

Mr. Cristian Prommesberger joins Prof. Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh’s group. He is a visiting student from the University of Applied Science, Regensburg, Germany. He will be spending a 5-month internship in the optical parametric oscillators group at ICFO and will contribute to the design and development of an optical diagnostic system for temporal measurements and characterization of ultrashort femtosecond and picosecond laser pulses.

After obtaining his Diploma in Prof. Ignacio Cirac's group, Mr. Philipp Hauke joins ICFO as a PhD student funded by Caixa Manresa. He will work with Prof. Maciej Lewenstein’s and Prof. Antonio Acín’s groups on ultracold gases, spin models and the application of these to quantum information.

Mr. Lars Würflinger is a PhD student in the Quantum Information Theory group led by Antonio Acín. He will study multipartite entanglement, with an emphasis on the distribution of entanglement and other quantum information resources over quantum networks.

Ms. Amel Houyou joins Prof. Niek van Hulst’s group as one of the Master in Photonics students from Strasbourg, France. Amel will work on advanced probes for nanoscale bio-imaging. She will explore a new scheme to enhance probe brightness, implement a novel scanning unit in a near-field microscope and apply the advanced nanophotonic probes for imaging.

Mr. Nicolas Rahuel joins Prof. Dmitri Petrov’s group as one of the Master in Photonics students from Strasbourg, France. He will experimentally study the application of optical beams with orbital angular momentum in the position detection of microspheres.

Mr. Alexandre Thai joins Prof. Jens Biegert’s group as one of the Master in Photonics students from Strasbourg, France. He will work on scaling properties in Optical Parametric Chirped Pulse Amplification and investigate cascading effects, background and spatial dependencies.

Mr. Daniel Mitrani will join the electronics workshop. His work will be focused on the making and repair of new electronic devices, together with their design, development, testing and fine tuning. He will advise researchers on technical aspects regarding electronics and telecommunications.

Mr. Rafael Giner will be the financial coordinator of ICFO Management economic area.
