26 April 2012 ECIO 2012 in Sitges

ICFO organizes the successful 16th European Conference on Integrated Optics. On April 18-20, ECIO, the 16th European Conference on Integrated Optics and technical exhibition, was held in Sitges, Barcelona. This semi-annual event which is organized on a rotational basis was chaired this year by ICREA Professor and Group Leader at ICFO, Valerio Pruneri. The event included approximately sixty oral presentations, including plenary, tutorials and invited speakers, as well as over one hundred posters.

The advanced program featured technical sessions on traditional topics such as integrated photonics in silicon and III-V semiconductors, nonlinear waveguide devices, microwave photonics, and photonic crystals, as well as emerging fields such as single photon and quantum devices, photonics in single atomic sheets of graphene and plasmonics. The program thus reflected the importance of both technology and applications of integrated optics as well as the emerging research toward new materials, devices and applications.

ECIO welcomed approximately 250 participants for the core conference as well as many more who participated in the FIB for Photonics workshop and OWTNM (Optical Waveguide Theory and Numerical Modelling) workshop, both collocated with the conference. The number of participants as well as the quality of the presentations reflected the long standing tradition of the ECIO event, which will continue in the 2014 in Nice, France.
