Micro-structured integrated electro-optic LiNbO3 modulator

cover of Laser&Photonics Reviews.
The picture of a micro-structured integrated electro-optic modulator made with a lithium niobate crystal makes the cover of the April issue of Laser&Photonics Reviews (LPR). The image refers to a review paper that appears in the journal published by researchers in Prof. Valerio Pruneri’s group. According to LPR, micro-structuring techniques in lithium niobate crystals can lead to unprecedented performance in integrated Mach-Zehnder modulators, including ultra-low voltage and large bandwidth operation.

The paper published by Dr. Davide Janner , Mr. Domenico Tulli, and Dr. Miguel García-Granda at ICFO, together with Prof. Valerio Puneri, ICREA Professor at ICFO, and Dr. Michele Belmonte at the Avanex Corporation,Italy, reviews the state of the art of this field. It shows how micro-structuring techniques, such as etching, domain inversion and thin film processing can be utilized to realize new configurations with performances at unprecedented levels. Moreover, the authors report recent results on the use of domain inversion on a micron scale, the fabrication of a chirp-free modulator and some new modulation formats (e.g. DQPSK). Finally, they address the issue of the integration of the modulator chip in a transmitter board comprising tunable laser, biascontrol electronics and RF driver.
