25 January 2005 ICFO strengthens Nanophotonics and Quantum Optics research areas

New groups led by Prof. Niek van Hulst (Nanophotonics) and Prof. Maciej Lewenstein (Quantum Optics) to join ICFO soon Prof. Maciej Lewenstein will join ICFO as an ICREA research professor in March 2005 coming from the University of Hannover (Germany), where he has been working on Quantum Optics for seven prolific years as a group leader. Prof. Lewenstein’s research interests include cold gases, Bose-Einstein condensation, quantum information theory, matter in strong fields, etc.

Prof. Niek van Hulst, who at present leads the Applied Optics group at the MESA Institute of Nanotechnology, University of Twente (the Netherlands) will join ICFO this September 2005. Prof. van Hulst will join the Institute as an ICREA research professor, with a program addressed to Nanophotonics. Prof. van Hulst’s research interests include single molecule detection, nano-optics, photonic structures and scanning probe technology with applications in molecular biology and chemistry.
