ICFO scientists collaborate in a new advancement for the manipulation and control of optical vortices

The newspaper El PAIS describes this story, published in Physical Review Letters this September

October 29, 2005
The newspaper EL PAIS highlights a series of important theoretical predictions about the intimate properties of optical vortices, also referred to as “optical tornadoes”, propagating in optical lattices. The new findings open the possibilities to new schemes of vortex manipulation and control. Results were published in a series of papers published in PRL during the last weeks.

This work was conducted by Prof. Albert Ferrando (Universitat de València), and contributed by Prof. Pedro Fernández de Córdoba (Universitat Politècnica de València), Prof. Lluis Torner and Dr. Yaroslav Kartashov (ICFO). Optical vortices are ubiquitous features of light beams that exhibit a variety of fascinating physical phenomena, with potential far-reaching applications optical tweezers and spanners, optical data storage, or quantum information.

To feature published by El Pais is available at: EL PAIS, Sociedad(Spanish).
