Successful review of the European QGATES project

Prof. Eschner and PhD student Herbert Crepaz have been working in an atom trap experiment supported by the network.

The reviewers and EU representatives, who met in Paris on the 14th of February, were very impressed with the work of the European Network QGATES. Prof. Jürgen Eschner and PhD Student Herbert Crepaz have been working in the Atom Trap experiment, supported by the network. This experiment was featured by the newspaper El Pais in 2004 as ‘The Coldest place in Spain’. ICFO joined for the last year (2005) the Network called "Quantum Gates and Elementary Scalable Processors Using Deterministically Addressed Atoms" (QGATES). Prof. Eschner participated in the network already from the outset with his previous group in Innsbruck.

As an EU Shared Cost RTD programme, QGATES is devoted to implementing quantum information processing (QIP) using trapped ions, trapped atoms and cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED) techniques. For 3 years, the network has been working towards the demonstration of elementary quantum processors, using technologies involving individually addressed ions or neutral atoms, and cavity QED methods.
