New ICFOnians

Sixteen new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the month of November and December. Welcome aboard!

Two visiting scientist Dr. Wei Cai , and Dr. Arkadiusz Kosior,, three postdoc researchers, Dr. Cedric Hurth, Dr. Nadine Meyer, Dr. Tsuneto Kanai, two research engineers, Dr. Johannes Ziegler ,and Roger Guiu, three PhD students, Awoke Negash, Bernard Ciraulo, Mariia Kramarenko, two visiting PhD students, Michael Stührenberg and Julius Huijts , three visiting students, Marc Torrent and Marco Valentini , David Masip and one administration staff, Filippo Ponz de León joined ICFO in the month of November and December. Welcome aboard!

Dr. Wei Cai, who holds a PhD degree in Condensed Matter Physics from Nankai University in China, has joined the Nanophotonics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Javier Garcia de Abajo as a visiting scientist. During his stay, he will be working with the group on collaborations on simulation of plasmons, graphene optical response, and planning experiments for these systems.

Dr. Arkadiusz Kosior, who obtained his PhD in Physics from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow Poland, is now joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting scientist. During his stay at ICFO, he will be conducting research on ultracold atoms and related subjects.

Dr. Cedric Hurth, who obtained his PhD degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Texas (US) / Université de Bordeaux (FR), is now joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a postdoctoral fellow. At ICFO he will be centering his research on Biosensors for microorganisms mainly and biomarkers partly.

Dr. Nadine Meyer, who obtained her PhD degree in Quantum Matter from the University of Birmingham in United Kingdom, is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, she will be working on Quantum cavity Optomechanics

Dr. Tsuneto Kanai, who holds a PhD degree in Physics from the University of Tokyo in Japan, is now joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be conducting research on MidIR OPCPA

Dr. Johannes Ziegler, who obtained his PhD degree in Physics from the Johannes Kepler University Linz in Austria, is now joining the Super-resolution Light Microscopy & Nanoscopy Lab led by Dr. Stefan Wieser as a research engineer. At ICFO, he will be focusing his reserach on assemble the LLSM laboratory.

Roger Guiu Tort, who holds a MSc degree in Nanoscience & Nanotechnology from the Universitat de Barcelona in Spain, is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a research engineer. At ICFO, he will be working on the OLI project.

Awoke Negash, who obtained his MSc degree in Photonics Engineering from Ghent University in Belgium, is now joining the SLN facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez as a EMJD PhD-Student. At ICFO, he will be centering his doctoral studies on Structured illumination in light sheet microscopy.

Bernard Ciraulo, who holds a Master Degree in Physics - Universita degli Studi di Palermo in Italy, is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a PhD Student. At ICFO, he will be centering his doctoral studies on topics related to the research field.

Mariia Kramarenko, who obtained a MSc degree in Photonics from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Spain is now joining the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by UPC Prof. at ICFO Jordi Martorell as a PhD student. At ICFO, she will be focusing her studies on research in the field of PVK cells.

Michael Stührenberg, who obtained his MSc in Physics from the Bielefeld University in Germany is joining the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst as a visiting PhD student. At ICFO, he will be focusing his work on Control of non-linear optical response of metal nanoanatennas.

Julius Huijts, who holds a MSc degree in Applied Physics from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, is now joining the the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a visiting PhD Student. During his stay at ICFO, Julius will be working on x-ray diffraction concepts and techniques.

Marc Torrent, who is pursuing a MSc degree in Photonics, Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Spain is now joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a visiting student. At ICFO, he will be focusing his studies on Quantum Dynamics.

Marco Valentini, who is pursuing MSc degree in Engineering Physics from the Politecnico di Milano in Italy is now joining the Quantum Photonics With Solids And Atoms research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Prof. Hugues de Riedmatten. At ICFO, he will be conducting research related to spin echoes for long-lived solid state quantum memories.

David Masip, who is pursuing BSc degree in Physics and Mathematics from the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona (ES) is now joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Prof. Antonio Acin. At ICFO, he will be conducting research related Multi-parameter metrology.

Filippo Ponz de León, is now joining ICFO’s Projects Unit as part of the Administration Staff. At ICFO, she will be in charge of Pre-Award Management, in all aspects relevant to research funding management as well as in the preparation of the research proposals, assuring compliance with the call funding policies and regulations, text structure, etc
