IGNITE CALL Awardees
ICFO participates in one of three multidisciplinary projects funded in the Ignite Program’s second phase.

The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology has awarded three outstanding multidisciplinary projects within the BIST Community with grants to continue the projects they began developing through the Ignite Program’s first phase in 2017. The BIST Ignite Program aims to promote the initiation of new collaborations among the BIST researchers, facilitating the exchange of knowledge among different scientific fields and exploring new approaches to address complex questions.
All of the winners of this second phase of the inaugural BIST Ignite Program contribute significantly to the scientific landscape: The design of an innovative retinal prosthesis, a new methodology to study and model the organization and functions of genes in the cell nucleus, and the characterization of new catalysts that allow separation of oxygen and hydrogen from water.
THEIA (“Towards the implementation of a multi-electrode array for retinal prosthesis”), led by Pablo Loza-Álvarez of ICFO and José Antonio Garrido of ICN2.
GenStorm (“An integrated approach to visualize and model the spatial conformation of genes at the nanoscale level”), led by Marie Victoire Neguembor of CRG and Pablo Dans Puiggrós of IRB Barcelona.
InWOC (“In-situ atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy of heterogeneous water oxidation catalysts”), led by José-Ramón Galán-Mascarós of ICIQ and Jordi Arbiol of ICN2.
These projects were chosen from the eight that were awarded a BIST Ignite grant during the first phase at the beginning of last year. All eight projects were developed over the course of 2017. At the end of 2017, they presented their results to a selection panel, along with a proposal for further research. The top three projects were selected to receive a second grant to continue their work. Due to the high quality of the results obtained by all eight teams however, the selection was not easy. In the words of the Panel members, “it was tough not recommending all the projects for funding”.
The BIST community congratulates all of the winners of the second phase of the inaugural BIST Ignite Program. We are eager to follow the progress of these projects!
