Barcelona City Hall Agreement

ICFO and the City Hall of Barcelona sign an agreement to promote the transfer of technology developed at ICFO to the market.

March 05, 2018
The City Council of Barcelona and ICFO recently signed an agreement that aims to give the institute support in carrying out frontier research, in search of technologies that can be transferred from the research lab to the market and thus strengthen and promote the local industrial and business networks. This agreement also has the objective of attracting talent to the city, strengthening the roles of ICFO and Barcelona as key players in today’s scientific and technological revolution.

The signature took place during a visit to ICFO by Mr. Gerardo Pisarello, First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona and Mr. Lluis Gomez, Barcelona Commissioner for economic promotion, business and innovation. During this visit, Pisarello highlighted the importance of photonics research as the technology of the XXI century, in comparison to electronics in the XX century. He noted the impact of photonics on today’s society, stressing the importance of developments in the field of 2D materials, mainly graphene, and quantum technologies. He also emphasized that Barcelona is considered an economic and technological hub of Southern Europe thanks to the excellence of its research community, including centers like ICFO.

The agreement signed by both entities gives ICFO support to accomplish the goal of building a local industrial network and transferring the research developed at the institute into applications that can significantly improve the quality of life of our society.
