ICFO PhD student Juan Rombaut declared high-performance athlete in Aeromodelling by Higher Council of Sports At ICFO, Juan Rombaut is a Fundació Mir-Puig Fellow and PhD student in the Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof. Valerio Pruneri. Outside ICFO however, his love of technology comes together with a passion for aeromodelling in a highly successful athletic career.

Juan is the ten time Champion of Acrobatic Aeromodelling in Spain, ranking in the World Top 10 in the F3A division, with the ambition to become one of the top five pilots in the world. As a further recognition of his status of elite athlete in a sport that he has competed in since the age of thirteen, Juan has recently been named one of Spain’s “High Level Athletes” (DAN: Deportista de Alto Nivel) by the Higher Council of Sports (Consejo Superior de Deportes).

Receiving this official title is an extraordinary achievement for any athlete as it is a recognition of attainment of a very elite level in athletic development. The title was created to support leading athletes in Spain and to underscore their importance as national representatives in official international sporting competitions.
