Clara Vilches (ICFO)

Biography:

Clara Vilches graduated in Biotechnology in 2009 by Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and obtained her Ph.D. in Biomedicine in 2015 by Universitat de Barcelona. During her thesis, she studied the molecular bases and pathophysiology of aminoacidurias and associated rare diseases using mouse models. In 2015, she joined the Plasmon Nano-optics group at ICFO, led by Prof Dr Romain Quidant, to develop in vitro and in vivo plasmonic photothermal therapy for different applications. In 2020, she started her current position at ICFO Medical Optics led by Prof Dr Turgut Durduran, where she has been focused on the pre-clinical optimization and personalization of plasmonic photothermal using diffuse optical monitoring.

Lecture "Light for health: nano - and biophotonics for medical applications"

Seminar: "Towards personalized medicine: use of diffuse optical monitoring to optimize plasmonic photothermal therapy"

The use of light has revolutionised biology and medicine several times in History. From the first optical microscopy to the latest targeted light-based therapy, photonics has changed the way we understand and deal with health and disease. Current applications of biophotonics are very broad, ranging from non-invasive diagnosis and advanced imaging, to improved, new, targeted treatments. This lecture will focus in two particular uses of light for medical applications: light to heat and treat malignancies, and light to see inside our bodies and obtain physiological information.

In the first part of this lecture, we will learn about plasmonic photothermal therapy, which uses light and gold nanoparticles to produce local heat to ablate unwanted tissue, like solid cancer tumours. In the second part of the lecture, we will see the basics of diffuse optical technologies and demonstrate the utility of using non-invasive monitoring in several clinical scenarios.

Finally, in the seminar session, I will demonstrate how combining both plasmonic photothermal therapy and diffuse optical monitoring we can optimize and personalize cancer treatment.
