Thirty seven new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the months of January and February

One visiting scientist, Daniel Schick, three postdocs, Vincenzo D’Ambrosio, Ernesto Vidal, Lorenzo Cortese, seven research engineer, Gianluca Cotta, Marina Cunquero Navarro, Enric Vinas Balada, Ameer Ghouse, Maria Benitez, Ona Bombi Aymerich, and Cristina Garcia Domene, five Ph.D. students, Hanyu Ye, Guillermo Martinez-Denegri, Nils Guenther, Susmita Sridhar, Pablo de Roque, sixteen students, Paula Canet, Jordi Puig, Julien Guilbert, Irina Suarez Martinez, Anise Laadjal, Judith Medina, Mariona Castrejon Subira, Maria Garcia Sanz, Daniel Perez Salinas, David Moreno Mencia, Constantino Rodriguez, Tessa Verboven, Dario Lago Rivera, Marta Pita, Gerard Jimenez Machado, and Gorka Muñoz Gil, one visiting PhD Student, Daniel Arnold, and three administration staff, Jordi Roca, Juan Ignacio Bascuas Véntola, and Alexandra Chaves, have joined ICFO in the month of January and February.

Dr. Daniel Schick, who has obtained his doctoral degree in Physics from the University of Potsdam, Germany, is visiting the Ultrafast Optical Dynamics Of Solids research group led by Prof at ICFO Simon Wall to work on Time-resolved Non-linear Spectroscopy of Solids.

Dr. Vincenzo D’Ambrosio obtained his PhD in Physics at the Sapienza- Universita di Roma and now is joining the Plasmon Nano Optics research group led by UPC Prof. Romain Quidant as a postdoctorate fellow. At the institute, he will be working on optomechanics in optical nanocavities.

Dr. Ernesto Vidal, who received his PhD in Automatic Control University of Sheffield – UK, is joining the Optoelctronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a postdoc researcher. At ICFO, he’ll be doing research on transparent electrodes for flexible electronics.

Dr. Lorenzo Cortese obtained his PhD in International Doctorate in Atomic and Molecular Photonics LENS at the European Laboratory for Non-Linear Spectroscopy, Universita degli Studi di Firenze – Italy. He is now joining the Medical Optics research group led by Prof at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a postdoc researcher to work on the physical modelling, standardization and laboratory testing for LUCA and other related projects.

Gianluca Cotta, who received a Medical degree from Universita degli Studio di Pavia, in Italy, and has been working in the Dept. of Respiratory Medicine Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Barcelona, now joins the Medical Optics research group led by Prof at ICFO Turgut Durduran. He will be working as clinical coordinator, data-manager, acquisition and arrangement of clinical data.

Marina Cunquero Navarro, who obtained a Master in Clinical Analysis Laboratory (BIOLAC) is now joining the SLN Facility led by Prof. at ICFO Pablo Loza to work as a research engineer carrying out resource management and assistant tasks for the SLN Facility.

Enric Viñas Balada, who obtained his degree in Environmental Sciences from the Universitat de Barcelona, is now joining the SLN Facility led by Prof. at ICFO Pablo Loza to work as a research engineer carrying out resource management and assistant tasks for the SLN Facility.

Ameer Ghouse, who received a BSc. in Biomedical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, in USA is now joining the Medical Optics research group led by Prof at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a research engineer. At ICFO, he will be working on the project LlumMedBCN.

Maria Benitez, who holds a degree in Chemistry from the University of Barcelona, has joined the Knowled and Technology Transfer unit led by Dr. Silvia Carrasco as a research engineer. At ICFO, she will be assisting in the research and development of prototypes for the unit.

Ona Bombi Aymerich, who holds a degree in Industrial Design Engineering from Elisava, is now joining ICFO’s Knowledge and Technology Transfer Unit to assist in the development of prototypes for the unit.

Cristina Garcia Domene, who holds a BSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, joins ICFO to work with the NFL Facility led by Dr. Gonçal Badenes. At ICFO, she will be assisting the NFL Facility as a research engineer.

Hanyu Ye, who obtained her M.S. in optical engineering at National University of Defense Technology, Changsha, China is now joining the Optical Parametric Oscillators research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Prof. Dr. Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh to carry out her PhD studies. At ICFO, she will be working on the development of innovative OPO sources for the mid-IR for applications in imaging and spectroscopy.

Guillermo Martinez-Denegri received a MSc in Materials for Energy Systems from Cranfield University in Great Britain. He has joined the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by UPC Prof. Jordi Matorell as a PhD student. At ICFO he will work on perovskites solar cells for his thesis studies.

Nils Guenther, who obtained an International Master in Fundamental Physics from the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, France, has recently joined the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein to carry out his doctoral studies. At ICFO he will be doing research on quantum many systems using contemporary numerical and analytic methods.

Susmita Sridhar, who is carrying out her studies at the Institut Fresnel University Aix—Marseille in France, is now joining the Medical Optics research group led by Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a PhD student as part of the Europhotonics Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate (EMJD) program. She is joining ICFO to continue her research studies.

Pablo de Roque, who obtained a Master in Photonics from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Spain, has recently joined the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof at ICFO Niek van Hulst as a Phd Student. At ICFO, Pablo will be working on Field enhancement and mode density in nanostructures.

Maria Maffei, who has received a Master Degree in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics and Optics from University of Naples Federico II in Italy is visiting the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting PhD student. At ICFO, she will be doing theoretical research in the subjects related to quantum random walks and topological order in quantum dynamical systems.

Paula Canet, who holds a degree in Industrial Design Engineering from Elisava, joins the Nano-optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a student. At ICFO, she will be working on designing industrial wearable devices based on new materials and interactive applications.

Jordi Puig, who has obtained BSc in Engineering Physics, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, is joining the Photovoltaics research group led by UPC Prof. Jordi Matorell. At ICFO, he will be carrying out research concerning semi-transparent solar cells.

Julien Guilbert holds an Engineering degree from the Institut d’Optique Graduate school in Palaiseau, France. He is now joining the Attoscience And Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert to work on Quantum and Nonlinear Optics research topics.

Irina Suarez Martinez, who currently studying a Masters program in Biomedical Sciences, from the University of Barcelona, is now joining the Advanced Fluorescence Imaging And Biophysics research group led by Prof. at ICFO Melike Lakadamyali. At ICFO, she will be doing research on super resolution microscopy of autoimmune encephalitis.

Anise Laadjal, who obtained a MSc degree in Physics from ICFP, ENS in Paris France, joins the Nano-optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens. At ICFO, he will be doing research related to graphene nano-optoelectronics.

Judith Medina, who holds a MSc degree in Photonics from the joint program between UPC, UAB, UB and ICFO, now joins the Plasmon Nano-optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant. At ICFO, she will be doing research on plasmon based optofluidics.

Mariona Castrejon Subira, who is carrying out her master studies in Biomedical Engineering, Universitat Pompeu Fabra and has participated as an ICFO summer fellow in 2015, now joins the Medical Optics research group led by Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a student. At ICFO, she will be carrying out her final degree research project on non-contact photoplethymography.

Maria Garcia Sanz, who is studying Physics Engineering at the UPC, joins as a student the Medical Optics research group led by led by Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran. At ICFO, she will be carrying out diffuse optical experimentations.

Daniel Perez Salinas, a Master-student in Photonics from the joint Photonics program of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Polytechnic University of Catalonia and ICFO, joins ICFO to work with the Ultrafast Optical Dynamics Of Solids research group led by Prof at ICFO, Simon Wall. At ICFO, he will be doing resarch on optical control of thermal diffusion in phase change materials.

David Moreno Mencia, another Master-student in Photonics from the joint Photonics program of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Polytechnic University of Catalonia and ICFO, is also joining the Ultrafast Optical Dynamics Of Solids research group led by Prof at ICFO, Simon Wall. He will be working on the characterization of a femtosecond mid-IR light pulse for time-resolved optical spectroscopy.

Constantino Rodriguez, also a Master-student in Photonics from the joint Photonics program of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Polytechnic University of Catalonia and ICFO, has arrived to ICFO to work with the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein. He will be conducting theoretical research on quantum optics related subjects.

Tessa Verboven, a MSc student in Theoretical Physics from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, is also joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein. She will be working on the lattice models with artificial gauge fields in relation to Leticia Tarruell's experiments.

Dario Lago Rivera, a Master-student in Photonics from the joint Photonics program of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Polytechnic University of Catalonia and ICFO, now joins ICFO to work with the Quantum Photonics With Solids And Atoms led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten. At ICFO, he will be conducting research on quantum memory compatible photon pair sources.

Marta Pita, who holds a bachelor’s degree on Physics Engineering and Bachelor’s degree on Mathematics at the Superior Interdisciplinar Training Centre (CFIS) of the UPC, now joins the Nano-optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens. At ICFO, she will be studying topics related to photo current in 2d materials.

Gerard Jimenez Machado, a BSc student in Physics, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya –UPC, joins ICFO to work with the Quantum Engineering Of Light research group led by UPC Prof. Juan P. Torres. At ICFO, he will carry out the implementaion of two sources of paired photons generated by parametric downconversion as well as the experimental control with spatial filters of beam sizes of pump beams to maximize paired photon production.

Gorka Muñoz Gil, a Master-student in Photonics from the joint Photonics program of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, University of Barcelona, Polytechnic University of Catalonia and ICFO, is joining ICFO to work with the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein. At ICFO, he will be conducting research in Quantum Optics related topics.

Daniel Arnold, who is pursuing his Master studies in Physics Sciences from the University of Stuttgart, Vahingen – Germany, is joing the Quantum Information With Cold Atoms And Non-classical Light led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell. He has joined the group to collaborate on a project in atomic magnetometry.

Jordi Roca Sola, who holds a degree from EADA Business School, is now joining the Management Cabinet as part of the Administration Staff. At ICFO, he will be in charge of the management of Academic Events.

Juan Ignacio Bascuas, who holds a degree in Business Administration from the University of Valencia, is now joining the Human Resources and Education Unit where he will be carrying out support tasks in different labor related and educational areas.

Alexandra Chaves is now joining ICFO’s Projects Unit as part of the Administration Staff. At ICFO, she will be in charge of assisting in all aspects relevant to research funding management as well as in the preparation of the research proposals, assuring compliance with the call funding policies and regulations, text structure, etc.
