Last Thursday at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Barcelona, Prof. Antonio Acín discussed randomness and uncertainty in quantum mechanics. These subjects have been viewed generally as the most anti-intuitive and unsatisfactory in this discipline. However, the birth and development of Quantum Information Theory has shown how they can be used to perform tasks hitherto impossible, like secure transmission of information and generation of random numbers.
