Dr. Darrick Chang

New Junior Group Leader

ICFO is happy to announce the arrival of Dr. Darrick Chang as a Nest Fellow.

August 17, 2011
Dr. Darrick Chang will soon join ICFO as a Junior Group Leader with a research program at the interface of nano-photonics, quantum optics, nano-mechanics, condensed matter physics, and quantum information science.

Dr. Chang received his PhD from Harvard University, where he worked on plasmonic techniques to strongly couple single quantum emitters to single photons. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Quantum Information at Caltech, USA. Dr. Chang has been recently developing new methods to observe and manipulate the quantum interaction between light and nano-mechanical systems, showing for instance that light can be stopped and stored, by reversibly converting an optical pulse to mechanical excitations in an array of opto-mechanical systems.

The general goal of his research program is to develop novel tools to understand and manipulate light and light-matter interactions at the quantum level. He is particularly interested in the potential for exciting, multi-disciplinary ideas that can emerge at the interfaces of nano-photonics, quantum optics, nano-mechanics, condensed matter physics, and quantum information science. While his work is theoretical, he also anticipates in a number of close collaborations with experimental groups in those areas. Specific research projects that he plans to pursue at ICFO include quantum manipulation of motion in graphene nano-mechanical devices, control of optical forces and optical trapping at the nanoscale, and study of interactions and entanglement of atoms coupled to nano-photonic systems.

Welcome Darrick!
