New ICFOnians

New researchers join ICFO.

May 07, 2014
Three postdoctoral researchers, Dr. Laurent Ladépêche, Dr. Jason Otterstrom, and Dr. Michele Sclafani; two visiting scientists, Ms. Jia Kong and Ms. Fernanda Pinheiro; four students, Mr. Elias Rehmann, Mr. Vincent Lienhard, Camille Lagoin, and Mr. Armin Tavakoli; one Research Engineer, Mr. Victor Colodrero; have joined ICFO.

Dr. Laurent Ladépêche received a PhD in Neuroscience at the Interdiscplinary Institute for Neuroscience of the University of Bordeaux, in France. During his research, he studied the role and regulation of neuronal receptor dynamics in adaptive processes using a combination of high resolution microscopy and high specificity molecular tools. He joins ICFO as Postdoctoral fellow in the group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali for a project in collaboration with the group of Prof. Josep Dalmau at Hospital Clínic (IDIBAPS). During his stay, he will use techniques such as super-resolution nanoscopy and single particle tracking on neuronal cultures to investigate the dynamic reorganization of synaptic receptors during autoimmune disorders.

Dr. Jason Otterstrom obtained his Ph.D. in Biophysics from Harvard University under the supervision of Dr. Prof. Antoine van Oijen and joined him for a time at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. His doctoral thesis utilized single-particle fluorescence microscopy to investigate membrane fusion as mediated by the influenza hemagglutinin protein (HA) and the mechanism of action for blocking such fusion through binding of highly specific antibodies. He joins ICFO as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali where he will advance multi-color super-resolution fluorescence microscopy techniques for the study of DNA organization within the nucleus of stem cells. This work will be performed in collaboration with the group led by Prof. Pia Cosma at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) in Barcelona.

Dr. Michele Sclafani completed his PhD studies at the University of Vienna, where he focused his experimental research on quantum molecular matter-wave interferometry. He specialized in single molecule techniques, beams sources and detectors. He joins the Attoscience and ultrafast optics group led by Prof. J. Biegert and he will investigate single molecule imaging by laser induced electron diffraction.

Ms. Jia Kong is a student at East China Normal University, where she is studying experimental quantum optics with atomic ensembles and non-classical light. At ICFO she will be working on interaction of squeezed light with hot atomic ensembles and quantum-enhanced optical magnetometry. She joins the group led by Prof. Morgan Mitchell.

Ms. Fernanda Pinheiro joins ICFO to collaborate with the Quantum Optics Theory group led by Prof. Maciej Lewenstein to work on disordered systems and in particular on disorder induced order phenomenon.

Mr. Elias Rehmann is about to obtain his Master's degree in Materials Science at ETH Zurich. He joins ICFO as a visiting student in order to write his Master thesis. He will be working on the development of semi-transparent organic solar cells in the group led by Prof. Jordi Martorell. At ETH, he worked on CdTe thin film and PbS quantum dot solar cells.

Mr. Vincent Lienhard is currently studying physics at ENS Cachan, in France. His previous experimental experience includes a summer internship in the group of Antoine Browaeys at Institut d’Optique, where he worked on the Rydberg atom project. He joins the Ultracold Quantum Gases group led by Prof. Leticia Tarruell for his 4th year project, during which he will develop electro-optical modulators, set up laser diodes and work on an optical trap for ultracold potassium gases.

Ms. Camille Lagoin is Masters student of the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Cachan (Paris). She joins the group led by Prof. Adrian Bachtold to work on nanotube mechanical resonators. She will develop a new experimental method to measure the ring-down time.

Mr. Armin Tavakoli is visiting the Quantum Optics Theory group led by Prof. Maciej Lewenstein with an internship to work on his BSc thesis on nonlinear witnesses of entanglement. He will work with Remik Augusiak and another visitor, Michal Omszaniec.

Mr. Victor Colodrero is a Research Engineer who will work in the Optoelectronics group led by Prof. Valerio Pruneri to develop the bioinformatics for the SixSenso project, in particular the software interface for the proximity image sensor.
