UPC Thesis Awards 2017

The UPC recognizes three ICFO PhD graduates with the Extraordinary PhD Thesis Award

The Extraordinary PhD Awards, given annually by the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC), aim to recognize the best doctoral theses which have obtained "cum laude" in their final PhD defense evaluation. This year, the UPC announced the list of 37 awardees, which include the theses of ICFO PhD graduates Dr Federica Beduini, Dr Juan Andrés Torreño and Dr Jordi Tura among the list of extraordinary doctoral works for the academic period 2014/2015.

Dr. Federica Beduini received her MSc in Physics from the Università degli studi di Milano, in Italy, before joining the Quantum information with cold atoms and non-classical light research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Morgan Mitchell. She centered her doctoral work on studying and understanding the microscopic entanglement properties of photons in a specific quantum state defined as polarization squeezed state. Her thesis was entitled ‘Entanglement and state characterisation from two-photon interference’.

Dr. Juan Andrés Torreño received his MSc in Chemistry from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany before joining the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Dr. María García Parajo. At ICFO, he centered his doctoral work on studying the distribution of molecular components of the cell membrane and their organization at the nanoscale. His thesis, entitled ‘Membrane Protein Nanoclustering as a Functional Unit of Immune Cells - from nanoscopy to function-‘, was co supervised by Prof. Maria García-Parajo and Dr. Carlo Manzo.

Dr. Jordi Tura received his Master in Applied Mathematics at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Spain before joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Prof. Dr. Maciej Lewenstein. At ICFO, he centered his doctoral work on studying and characterizing entanglement and nonlocal correlations under symmetries. His thesis, entitled ‘Characterizing Entanglement and Quantum Correlations Constrained by Symmetry’, was co-supervised by Prof Dr Maciej Lewenstein and Dr Remigiusz Augusiak.
