ICFO in “Optics in 2007”

Observation of lattice solitons highlighted by Optics and Photonics News.

December 05, 2007
Optics and Photonics News highlights in its special issue Optics in 2007 the joint theoretical and experimental work carried out by S. Nolte, T. Pertsch, A. Szameit and A. Tünnermann, (Institute of Applied Physics, Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany), A. Bezryadina, Z. Chen and X. Wang (Department of physics and Astronomy, San Francisco State University, Calif), D.N. Christodoulides, K.G. Makris and G.I. Stegeman (College of Optics and Photonics, CREOL & FPCE, University of Central Florida, Orlando) and Y.V. Kartashov and L. Torner (ICFO-Institute of Photonic Sciences).

The theoretical and experimental demonstration of nonlinear discrete surface solitons will pave the way for the study of new optical surface wave phenomena. Moreover, these promising results indicate that fs laser- written waveguide arrays and lattices induced in photorefractive crystals show high potential for the investigation of discrete surface phenomena that exist in other systems beyond optics.

Optics in 2007 is a special issue that highlights the most exciting research to emerge in the preceding 12 months in the fast-paced world of optics. The areas covered in 2007 include biophotonics, communications, holography, lasers, micro-optics, microscopy, nonlinear optics, photonic structures, plasmonics, quantum optics, slow light, solitons and ultrafast optics.
