ICFO in PHOTONICS4LIFE

ICFO is one of the partners in the new European Network of Excellence PHOTONICS4LIFE, one of the first FP7 NoEs.

May 13, 2008
PHOTONICS4LIFE has started on 1st may 2008 with a kick-off meeting (6-7 May 2008) at the IPhT-Institute of Photonic Technology (the coordinating institution) in Jena, Germany.

Besides ICFO, other partners are the University of St. Andrews (Scotland), Imperial College London (England), Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT), Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK, Germany), Lund University (Sweden), Saratov State University (Russia), University of Muenster (Germany), MESA+ at University of Twente (the Netherlands), Istituto di Fisica Applicata "Nello Carrara" (CNR IFAC, Italy), CNRS - Institut d'Optique Graduate School (France) and Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium).

PHOTONICS4LIFE aims to provide a coherent framework for research in the field of Biophotonics in Europe. One of the challenging tasks of PHOTONICS4LIFE is to overview the research and rapid technological developments across these various subdisciplines. PHOTONICS4LIFE targets to bridge the gaps between the different research communities, ranging from Physics and Engineering via Chemistry and Physical Chemistry to Biology and Medicine.

ICFO is particularly involved in:
  • new photonic technologies, bridging the nano-micro-macro gap, focused on imaging at sub-cellular and molecular level
  • photonics for non- and minimally-invasive diagnosis
  • novel optical components and subsystems from micro- to nano-scale in biophotonics
ICFO contributes actively to integrating actions:
  • international contacts and cooperation
  • workshops, public awareness
  • mobility, training
  • teaching and gender issues
