New ICFOnians

New researchers have joined ICFO.

November 12, 2010
Two postdoctoral researchers, Dr. Marcelo Ciappina and Dr.Claudia Nieva; one research engineer, Dr. Ángel Sandoval ; one PhD student, Ms. Nadia Formica; and one MSc student, Mr. Giacomo Corrielli, have joined ICFO.

Dr. Marcelo Ciappina obtained his PhD from Universidad de Cuyo, Argentina. He joins the Quantum Optics Theory group led by ICREA Prof. Maciej Lewenstein as a postdoctoral research fellow to work on theoretical attosecond physics. His project concerns directly current experiments going on at the group of ICREA Prof. Jens Biegert, and future joint experiments planed by Prof. Biegert and ICREA Prof. Romain Quidant.

Dr. Claudia Nieva obtained her PhD in Biology from Universitat de Barcelona, Spain. She joins ICFO as a postdoctoral research fellow at the group led by ICREA Prof. Dmitri Petrov. Dr. Nieva will use Raman spectroscopy for biomedical applications, in particular for study brain metastasis proteins and their interactions. The project belongs to a collaboration between ICFO and IDIBELL - Institut d’Investigació Biomèdica de Bellvitge.

Dr. Ángel Sandoval got his PhD from the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Leon, Spain. Dr. Sandoval joins the Advance Fluorescence Imaging and Biophysics group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali as a biology research engineer. He will deal with the biolevel 2 biology lab and the molecular and celular biology projects at the group.

Ms. Nadia Formica is an MSc student at the University of Catania, Italy. She rejoins ICFO to pursue her PhD in the Optoelectronics group led by ICREA Prof. Valerio Pruneri. She will work on the use of ultrathin metal films for the development of flexible lighting and photovoltaic devices.

Mr. Giacomo Corrielli studied Physics Engineering at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. He joins ICFO as a MSc student at the group led by ICREA Prof. Hugues de Riedmatten. He will work on quantum frequency down conversion of single photons compatible with quantum memories.
