New ICFOnians

New researchers and one member of Administration join ICFO.

February 21, 2014
One Postdoctoral researcher, Dr. Ioachim Pupeza; three visiting scientists, Ms. Mireya Elizabeth Ramírez Domínguez, Mr. Juan Esteban Calle Montoya, and Mr. Omar Palillero-Sandoval; six Phd Students, Mr. Lukas Neumeier, Mr. Mousa Bahrami, Mr. Aniello Lampo, Mr. Venkanagouda Goudar, Mr. Mehmet Alican Noyan, and Ms. Kavitha Kalavoor Gopalan; two undergraduate students, Ms. Mireia Aleu Barangé and Mr. Josep Canals Casals; and one member of Administration, Ms. Anna Tor Font; have joined ICFO.

Dr. Ioachim Pupeza carried out his PhD studies and research at the Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics (MPQ) and at the Ludwig Maximilians University Munich (LMU). After receiving his degree in 2011, he continued research on the topic of power scaling of femtosecond enhancement cavities for nonlinear optics, further developing this technique towards the generation of extreme-ultraviolet frequency combs and isolated attosecond pulses with multi-MHz repetition rates. Ioachim joined the Attoscience and ultrafast optics group led by ICREA Professor at ICFO Jens Biegert to investigate the generation of broadband frequency combs in the mid-infrared.

Ms. Mireya Elizabeth Ramírez Domínguez obtained her Master’s degree at University of Guanajuato in Electrical Engineering. She is a LabView developer certified by National Instruments. At ICFO she will work in the design and implementation of a toolbox in LabView for the control of advanced microscopes.

Mr. Juan Esteban Calle Montoya is a visiting PhD student from the Universidad de Antioquia in Colombia. The goal of his project is the implementation of low cost materials in organic solar cells. During his time as a PhD student his work has been focused on the stability of the organic solar cells and their roll to roll processing. At ICFO, he will be studying the incorporation of the new stabilizers on organic photovoltaic cells in the group led by Prof. Jordi Martorell.

Mr. Omar Palillero-Sandoval completed his Master’s degree at University of Guanajuato, and is currently a PhD student at INAOE, Mexico. At ICFO he will be working in the SLN facility led by Dr. Pablo Loza-Alvarez in applications of phase-space optics for light-sheet microscopy.

Mr. Lukas Neumeier obtained his Master’s degree in Physics from Technische Universitat Munchen, where he did theoretical work on circuit quantum electrodynamics. At ICFO, in the group led by Prof. Darrick Chang, he will be investigating novel optical trapping and manipulation schemes for atoms and nanoparticles, based upon engineered quantum vacuum forces and nano-optical systems.

Mr. Mousa Bahrami obtained his Master’s degree in Photonics from Shahid Beheshti University, where he did theoretical work on the properties of graphene nanoribbons. At ICFO, in the group led by Prof. Darrick Chang, he will investigate the application of carbon nanotubes and graphene nano-structures for nonlinear optics and opto/electro-mechanics.

Mr. Aniello Lampo is a PhD student in QOT group led by Prof. Maciej Lewenstein. He will be working on quantum Brownian motion in the frame of the new ERC project Open Systems Revisited.

Mr. Venkanagouda Goudar is a new PhD student in the Optoelectronics group who will work on a project in collaboration with the group led by Prof. Melike Lakadamyali to develop antimicrobial transparent surfaces.

Mr. Mehmet Alican Noyan is a new PhD student in the Optoelectronics group led by Prof. Valerio Pruneri who will work on a project in collaboration with HP to develop nano-structured surfaces for digital printing.

Ms. Kavitha Kalavoor Gopalan is a new PhD student in the Optoelectronics group led by Prof. Valerio Pruneri who will work on a project to develop graphene on ferroelectric crystal based photodetectors.

Ms. Mireia Aleu Barangé is currently in the last year of her degree in Industrial Design Engineering (specialized in materials and business management) at Elisava School in Barcelona. She is joining the KTT team to work in the external design of a laser instrument that will be part of ICFO's outreach activities. Mireia's work will be focused in evaluating construction materials and providing a design in compliance with both esthetic and functional criteria.

Mr. Josep Canals Casals has recently obtained his degree in Telecommunications Engineering, and is currently enrolled in the Master’s Program in Photonics at Barcelona. He joins the KTT team on a project consisting of the development of a laser instrument that will be part of ICFO's outreach activities. Josep will take care of the design of the electronics and the optics of the instrument.

Ms. Anna Tor Font joins ICFO’s Project Management Unit and will be responsible for the administrative management and follow-up of some of ICFO’s strategic research projects.
