Nanophotonic structures offer unprecedented versatility for controlling light-matter interaction at the subwavelength scale. This unique capability has important implications beyond the linear optical regime, enabling both fundamentally new phenomena and enhanced functionalities in systems that incorporate optical nonlinear or gain media. In this talk I will discuss several examples of such systems and phenomena, including: efficient second-harmonic generation using 4-quasi-phasematching in whispering-gallery-mode microcavities, strong coupling between hundreds of quantum emitters and localized surface plasmons, and subwavelength optical solitons in monolayer graphene. I will also provide a discussion of enhanced active nanophotonic systems featuring photonic Dirac cones.
